Professional

Graduate Student Training

An integral part of the Center for Group Counseling is the clinical training of future mental health professionals.  Graduate students from around the country apply to our doctoral psychology internship, social work internship, and practicum programs.  The Center offers graduate students a unique and dynamic learning experience in which trainees may develop their professional and personal identities.  Students receive intensive training in humanistic, client-centered therapy, but also learn and practice other psychological theories and techniques in a variety of settings with various populations.

Volunteers

Facilitator Training Course

The Facilitator Training Course (FTC), a key component in the Center’s provision of free counseling services, is the source from which we draw volunteer group leaders and facilitators, who are so critical to our mission. The FTC, offered semiannually, provides the opportunity for community residents, regardless of academic qualifications, to learn our counseling techniques. Additionally they have an opportunity  to apply that training by assisting in actual counseling groups conducted by professional credentialed counselors. Volunteer leaders and facilitators often discover that they themselves benefit from helping clients.

Our training course is:

  • A first step for mental health professionals to join our team of volunteer group leaders

  • A training program for paraprofessionals interested in assisting in groups

  • A way to help other people reach their potential

  • A course in listening and communication skills

  • A way to be useful and to restore meaning to living, by giving to others

  • An initial introduction to a place, a group of people of similar interests and a set of skills, all of which are potentially life-enhancing.

Community Service Programs

Psychodramatists

The Center’s Psychodramatists perform skits depicting typical life situations and relationship conflicts.  The scenes are roughly scripted, but actual dialogue is improvised. After each skit, actors remain in character and engage in an interactive discussion with the audience.  In addition to providing entertainment, psychodrama performances increase awareness and understanding of psychological and sociological issues.  All actors are Center volunteers.  Proceeds from performances are used to help fund the Center’s free group counseling programs for children, adults, and seniors.

Speaker’s Bureau

The Speaker’s Bureau provides staff and volunteer speakers to promote community awareness of the Center’s services and programs.  Informational presentations usually include a brief video about the Center and a question-answer session.  Community organizations that would like to arrange for a speaker can call the Center for information.

First Wednesdays

11:00 a.m. the First Wednesday of each month

Our "First Wednesdays" series is open to the general community. This series of presentations is an opportunity for members of the community to learn about mental health issues and topics. It also gives guests an opportunity to stay for lunch ($5 donation), meet the Center’s volunteers, and learn about the Center. First Wednesday presentations are free of charge. Reservations for lunch are required. Please call 561/483-5300 for more information.

The following four presentations will be led by our Predoctoral Psychology Interns:

November 4 "Child Witnesses to Domestic Violence" Iris Kiner, M.S.

December 2 "Phantom Limb and Coping with Pain" David Fuentes, M.S.

January 6 "Dissociative Identity Disorder (aka Multiple Personality Disorder)" Chrissyl Shaw, M.S.

February 3 "Mindfulness" Katie Boyd, M.A.
