Center ServicesThe Center for Group Counseling provides free group counseling services to people of all ages, from children to the elderly. The Center also offers free support groups for specific concerns, including bereavement, caregivers, divorce/separation, men’s issues, women’s issues, and seniors’ issues. Clinical Programs The Center provides quality mental health services using a variety of treatment modalities. Clinical services are provided by graduate students in training and volunteer mental health professionals under the close supervision of licensed psychologists. Except for participation in support groups, all clients receiving Center services must first complete an initial evaluation, which is a comprehensive clinical interview. After completing an intake form, a prospective client will meet with one of our clinicians for about one hour. Upon completion of the intake interview, our clinicians discuss the issues and needs of the client with our licensed psychologists at a weekly staffing meeting. The treatment team makes recommendations for services, which may be any one of the Center’s services or services provided elsewhere, depending on the client’s needs. The intake clinician will contact the client within one week of the initial evaluation to present the treatment team’s recommendations. The fee for the initial evaluation is $20 if it is prepaid. If the fee is not prepaid, the cost is $40 but may be reduced for those clients who are unable to pay. Adult Groups Our adult counseling groups meet Monday through Thursday, at scheduled times during the morning, afternoon and evening. The counseling groups do not have a specific theme, but rather bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds experiencing a range of life’s problems. Through the use of nondirective, client-centered therapy, clients are given the opportunity to work through problems at their own pace and in a nonjudgmental environment of unconditional positive regard. Participation in these groups requires an initial evaluation. Couples Group The Couples group offers couples the opportunity to improve communication and work through relationship challenges in a supportive environment. Participation in this group requires an initial evaluation. Parent-Child Groups Our parent and child groups are held simultaneously, so that parents can learn skills in parenting, while their children are working on improving social skills, self-esteem and problem-solving abilities. Parents and children meet for one hour weekly. Groups meet during after-school hours and are open ended so that new families can join at any time. These groups require an initial evaluation. Parent-Teen Group Our Targeting Teens and Parents Program is designed to improve communication between parents and their adolescent children and to decrease the frequency and intensity of conflicts at home. Parents and teens meet separately and together in groups, so that both sides can develop conflict resolution skills and then employ them in a group setting with other families. The group is held in the evening. Participation in this group requires an initial evaluation. Schools At participating elementary, middle, and high schools in Palm Beach County, the Center provides preventive counseling groups (a collaborative effort with parents, teachers, and guidance counselors) for at-risk students. Head Start As part of the Head Start program in Delray Beach, the Center’s pre-doctoral interns provide mental health consulting, including screening of all students, training workshops for teachers and parents, and play therapy groups with preschool children identified as needing special help in adjusting to the school setting. Support GroupsThe Center provides themed support groups on topics for which we have had significant demand within the community. Although these are not “therapy” groups, they maintain a client-centered focus in a nonjudgmental environment. Initial evaluations are not required for attendance at these groups.
SAGES (Senior Adult Group Experiences) sharing and caring counseling and support groups are conducted in several outreach locations throughout the community—residential communities, assisted living facilities, and senior centers. Initial evaluations are not required for attendance in these groups.
Individual One-on-One Therapy Sessions The Center also offers individual, couples and family therapy for those clients who demonstrate a clinical need for individual counseling. The cost for this therapy is $35 per session, although the fee may be reduced for those clients who are unable to pay. In order to receive individual therapy services, clients must first complete an initial evaluation. Psychological Testing The Center offers reduced cost comprehensive psychological evaluations for children and adults. Many parents seek our services for testing for their children, and our reports can be used for recommendations to schools regarding placement, FCAT testing, SAT preparation and diagnosis of learning disabilities. |
